The transformative power of afternoon naps: from children lessons to adult necessity

Updated: Jul 24

The transformative power of afternoon naps can reboot and restart my day even when it’s almost done. The simple act of closing my eyes for a brief period can transform my mood, enhance my productivity, and provide a much-needed pause in the hustle and bustle of daily life. This rejuvenation isn't merely a luxury; it often feels like a necessity, especially when the demands of the day have begun to wear me down.

As a child, I remember my grandmother always made me go to sleep right after lunchtime. For me, it was something my grandmother imposed on me with a sense of authority and care. I hated afternoon nap time, viewing it as an interruption of my play and exploration. Grandma would say, “Go to sleep so that you can grow,” a phrase that echoed in my ears but never resonated with my youthful understanding. I never quite grasped the deeper significance behind her words; I knew for sure that I would grow whether I slept or not. To my young mind, the world was full of wonders waiting to be discovered, and a nap felt like a barrier to my adventures.

Now, here I am, a grown woman, finally learning what it means to rest as much as possible. The lessons of my childhood have come full circle, and I find myself appreciating the value of those quiet moments of rest. I am always doing this or that; whatever time of the day you find me, I’m engaged in some task or another, whether it’s work-related, household chores, or social obligations. Ironically, I often feel guilty if I give myself a little shut-eye. The internal dialogue is relentless, filled with thoughts that I should be more productive, that I should be accomplishing something instead of indulging in what feels like slacking off. This guilt can be overwhelming, leading me to push through fatigue instead of embracing the restorative power of a nap.

I have learned the hard way what sleep deprivation and extreme exhaustion can do to the mind and body. The foggy brain, the irritability, and the physical fatigue are just the surface symptoms of a much deeper issue. Lack of rest can lead to a cascade of negative effects, from decreased cognitive function to compromised immune response. So right now, even as I am writing this blog, I know that I should be taking my afternoon nap. The thought of allowing myself that time to recharge is both enticing and daunting. It’s a moment to detox from the frenetic pace of life, to de-stress from the myriad responsibilities that weigh heavily on my shoulders, to recharge my energy levels, and most definitely, time to sleep. Embracing this practice of napping has become a vital part of my self-care routine, reminding me that rest is not a sign of weakness but rather a powerful tool for maintaining balance in a busy world.
